1890: Rangers kick-off the first ever Scottish League with a 5-2 win over Hearts at Ibrox. The honour of scoring Rangers’ first ever League fell to the Jambos’ Jimmy Adams who put the ball into his own net. The Edinburgh side actually took the lead but 2nd half goals from Hugh McCreadie, John McPherson and Neil Kerr (2) earned Rangers the victory.

1898: RC Hamilton and Jim Miller are on target in a 2-2 Friendly draw with Hearts. George Livingstone scores for the Jambos.

1899: Unfortunately, the goalscorers remain unknown from Rangers’ 5-1 thumping of Clydebank Juniors in a Friendly.

1900: Donald Cameron and RC Hamilton score once each as Rangers draw 2-2 in a Friendly with Partick Thistle.

1902: an RC Hamilton brace isn’t enough for Rangers who begin their League fixtures with a 5-2 loss to Third Lanark. Jock Drummond also scores an OG.

1905: Rangers are beaten 1-0 by Hibs in a Friendly.

1906: Rangers defeat Celtic 4-2 in a benefit match for Gers player Finlay Speedie. Speedie himself scored twice with Alec Smith and Jimmy Spiers also on target for the Light Blues. During the match, the Celtic goalkeeper David Adams severely cut his hand on the goalposts, surely keeping him out of the first few games of the new season. Rangers’ Tom Sinclair took over between the sticks and was loaned to the Parkhead Club whilst Adams recovered. During this time, he kept 6 consecutive clean sheets (which remained a Club record until 1994) and won a Glasgow Cup winners medal. After returning to Rangers, unhappy at the lack of first team football, he moved shortly afterwards to Newcastle.

1909: Rangers begin their season with a 3-0 victory over Kilmarnock at Ibrox. Alec Smith, Willie Reid and William Hunter all scored for the home side. Billy Hogg also missed a penalty.

1911: Ranges start their League fixtures with a 5-0 thumping of Raith thanks to goals from Willie Reid (2), Alex Bennett, Billy Hogg and James Galt.

1913: Rangers open their season with a 6-1 triumph over Kilmarnock. Goals from Alex Bennett, Willie Reid (2), Dr James Paterson, James Bowie and Jimmy Gordon saw Rangers ease to victory.

1919: James Bowie scores the only goal as Rangers kick-off their season with a 1-0 win at Airdrie.

1921: A goal each from Sandy Archibald, Andy Cunningham and Alan Morton sees Rangers start their news season with a 3-1 victory over Third Lanark.

1922: Carl Hansen is the Rangers goalscorer as they go down 3-1 to Celtic in Willie McStay’s benefit match.

1923: Rangers are beaten 2-1 by Celtic in a benefit match for Adam McLean. Carl Hansen was on the scoresheet for Rangers.

1924: Geordie Henderson nets a hat-trick in Rangers’ season opening 3-0 win over Raith at Ibrox.

1930: Rangers defeat Hearts 4-1 courtesy of goals from Jimmy Smith (2), Alan Morton and Sandy Archibald.

1941: 2 Jimmy Smith goals and 1 from Alex Venters hands Rangers a 3-2 win over Partick Thistle. Venters also missed a penalty.

1945: Rangers beat Partick Thistle 4-2 thanks to a Willie Waddell brace and goals from Torry Gillick and Jimmy Smith.

1947: A Billy Williamson brace and a goal from Jimmy Duncanson gives Rangers a 3-2 win over Third Lanark in the League Cup Section C.

1950: Despite Willie Findlay putting Rangers in-front on 11 minutes (a lead they would defend until the 86th minute), Rangers are defeated 2-1 by Aberdeen in the League Cup Section D.

1952: Goals from Derek Grierson (2) and Willie Thornton earn Rangers a 3-2 win over Aberdeen in the League Cup Section C.

1958: Ralph Brand and Max Murray are on target in Rangers’ 2-2 draw with Third Lanark in Section 1 of the League Cup.

1961: Rangers beat Dundee 4-2 in the League Cup Section 3 with goals scored by Ralph Brand (2), Jimmy Millar and Davie Wilson.

1967: Andy Penman scores an 88th minute equaliser as Rangers draw 1-1 with Celtic in the League Cup Section 2. Penman had missed a penalty earlier in the match.

1969: Orjan Persson, Sandy Jardine and Bobby Watson all score to give Rangers a 3-0 win over Airdrie in the League Cup Section 1.

1971: Colin Stein scores twice to win Rangers the Glasgow Cup with a 2-0 win over Clyde in the Final. This was the Final for the previous season’s competition that had been carried over.

1972: Rangers defeat St Mirren 4-0 in the League Cup Section 3 thanks to goals from Willie Johnston, John Greig, Colin Stein and Alfie Conn.

1975: John Greig is on target in Rangers’ 1-1 draw with Motherwell in the League Cup Section 1.

1978: Derek Johnstone, Derek Parlane and Gordon Smith are all on target as Rangers defeat Albion Rovers 3-0 in the League Cup 1st Round 1st Leg.

1980: Rangers defeat Partick Thistle 4-0 with goals coming from Davie Cooper, Colin McAdam, John McDonald and Sandy Jardine.

1986: Despite Ally McCoist handing Rangers a 2 goal lead inside 37 minutes, the Gers go down 3-2 to Dundee Utd at Ibrox, with Ian Redford scoring the 87th minute winner.

2003: Ronald de Boer, Michael Mols and Mikel Arteta all score in Rangers’ 3-2 win over Aberdeen at Pittodrie.

2006: Phil Bardsley joins Rangers on a season-long loan from Manchester Utd.

2008: Kyle Lafferty and Kris Boyd get the goals that see Rangers defeat Hearts 2-0 at Ibrox.

2015: Rangers’ excellent start to the season continues with a 5-1 drubbing of Alloa. James Tavernier, Martyn Waghorn, Jason Holt and Kenny Miller all scored to give Rangers a 4-1 half-time lead. Miller then got his 2nd with 5 minutes remaining to cap off a great performance at Recreation Park. Prior the match, Lee Wallace was named Club Captain.

2018: A 0-0 draw in Slovenia with Maribor ensures Rangers progress 3-1 on aggregate to face FC Ufa of Russia in the Europa League Play-Off Round. Allan McGregor was forced to make a penalty save in the last few minutes.
