1931: The Dundee Evening Telegraph reported that Rangers had signed a 22-year-old Centre-Forward from Yoker, named Sam English. That very season the Ulsterman would go on to score 44 League goals, a record that still stands today. Tragically, in September, just over 2 months since joining the Gers, English was involved in a fatal accidental collision with Celtic Goalkeeper John Thomson during the first Old Firm match of the season. It was an incident that English would not recover from, and faced cruel taunts from rival fans, eventually forcing him to move South, to Liverpool. Unfortunately, the abuse followed and he eventually gave up the game in 1938 at the age of just 28. He described his career after the accident as “7 years of joyless sport.”

The Gers found themselves a goal down in less than a minute but soon equalised through Jimmy Smith. Accies took the lead again, before doubling their advantage before goals from Willie McIntosh and Smith saw the sides level, 3-3, at Half-Time. It was the home side’s turn to take the lead, McIntosh scoring again on 56 minutes, but that lasted less than 2 minutes when Hamilton equalised from the penalty spot. Smith netted his hat-trick on 65 minutes but the visitors would find a leveller with 4 minutes left on the clock. It wasn’t enough to prevent the Light Blues progressing 8-6 on aggregate to face Hearts in the Semi-Final at Hampden.

1967: Rangers Enterprises is officially registered as a limited company, a subsidiary of Rangers Football Club Ltd. The new entity would extend Rangers’ commercial operations, and immediately invested in the 3-storey premises that would house the Rangers Social Club and the Rangers Pools offices.
