1931: The Dundee Evening Telegraph reported that Rangers had signed a 22-year-old Centre-Forward from Yoker, named Sam English. That very season the Ulsterman would go on to score 44 League goals, a record that still stands today. Tragically, in September, just over 2 months since joining the Gers, English was involved in a fatal accidental collision with Celtic Goalkeeper John Thomson during the first Old Firm match of the season. It was an incident that English would not recover from, and faced cruel taunts from rival fans, eventually forcing him to move South, to Liverpool. Unfortunately, the abuse followed and he eventually gave up the game in 1938 at the age of just 28. He described his career after the accident as “7 years of joyless sport.”
1986: Rangers sign Chris Woods from Norwich for £600,000, a World record fee for a Goalkeeper.
1994: Chris Vinnicombe departs Rangers for Burnley in a deal worth £200,000.
1997: Rangers sign Tony Vidmar and Jonas Thern on Free Transfers from NAC Breda and AS Roma respectively.
1998: A goal each from Charlie Miller, Peter van Vossen and David Graham hands Rangers a 3-1 win over Asane IL in the 2nd match of their Norwegian Tour. Alec Cleland, meanwhile, signs for Everton on a Free Transfer.
