1888: Rangers are beaten 2-1 in a Friendly by Uddingston. James “Tuck” McIntrye was on the scoresheet for the Gers.
1889: Hector and James McPherson are the only known goalscorers as Rangers beat Renton 3-2 in a Friendly at Ibrox.
1891: Rangers are defeated 1-0 by Dumbarton for the League Charity Cup. Just 5 days later, the 2 sides would meet again only this time in a play-off to crown the winners of the inaugural Scottish League.
1903: Rangers suffer a 1st Round exit in the Glasgow Merchants Charity Cup 1st Round thanks to a 1-0 loss to St Mirren.
1925: Rangers lift another Glasgow Merchants’ Charity Cup with a 1-0 victory in the Final over Clyde. Geordie Henderson nets the decisive goal.
1942: Goals from Willie Waddell, Alex Venters and Jimmy Duncanson seal another Glasgow Charity Cup for Rangers with a 3-1 win over Clyde in the Final.
1954: Rangers begin their North American Tour with a 1-0 victory over Chelsea in Montreal. A George Young penalty was all that could separate the teams. Rangers would meet the Londoners a further twice before heading home.
1972: Rangers prepare for their European Cup Winners’ Cup Final with a 5-2 win over St Mirren for the Paisley Charity Cup thanks to an Alfie Conn hat-trick and goals from Andy Penman and Alex MacDonald. Penman also missed a penalty. Just over a week later, the Light Blues would be turning out at the Nou Camp to face Moscow Dynamo in the 1972 European Cup Winners’ Cup Final.
1979: Once again Rangers draw 0-0 with Hibs in the Scottish Cup Final Replay. Meanwhile at Ibrox, John McDonald, Alex Forsyth and Derek Strickland scored as Rangers beat Celtic 3-1 in the Glasgow Cup Final.
1982: Rangers are beaten 4-2 by Southampton in a Testimonial match for Geoff Horsfall. John McDonald and Bobby Russell were the Rangers goalscorers. Ally Dawson also scored an OG. A week previously, the same 2 teams had met at Ibrox in Sandy Jardine’s Testimonial.
1985: Rangers are defeated 3-2 by Chelsea in a benefit match for the Bradford City Fire Disaster Fund. Ally McCoist and Ian Durrant were on target for the Ibrox side whilst Hugh Burns scored an OG at Stamford Bridge.
1986: Colin West becomes Graeme Souness’ first Rangers signing as he joins from Watford for £200,000.
1998: Walter Smith’s first spell as Rangers Boss ends in disappointment as the Light Blues are beaten 2-1 by Hearts in the Scottish Cup Final. Ally McCoist pulled a goal back for the Ibrox men. For the first time since season 1986/87, Rangers finished the campaign empty-handed.
2004: Rangers conclude their League fixtures with a 3-2 defeat of Dunfermline. Goals from Fernando Ricksen, Chris Burke and Ross McCormack saw Rangers come from 1-0 down to claim victory. The Gers had also had Michael Mols sent-off. The Ibrox Club finished a disappointing season with 2nd place in the League, 17 points behind Celtic.
2006: Rangers sign-up Libor Sionko on a Free Transfer from Austria Vienna.
2009: The Title race goes to final day as Rangers beat Aberdeen 2-1 in the penultimate League fixture. A Ricky Foster OG and a goal from Kenny Miller handed Rangers the win. The Light Blues had also had Madjid Bougherra dismissed. Going into the final round of matches, Rangers were 2 points ahead of Celtic with the Gers having to travel to Tannadice whilst Celtic faced Hearts at Home.
