Everton had looked to be in pole position for the 20 year-old’s signature, so much so that the Rams were warned that they would require “the Bank of England” if they wished to match their offer. However, McPhail remained adamant that he wanted to be playing his football at Ibrox, much to the chagrin of Airdrie. Persistence paid off, and a switch to Rangers was agreed shortly afterwards with a huge £5,000 required to bring the forward to Glasgow. It would certainly prove to be money well spent with McPhail scoring 261 times in 408 appearances until retirement in 1940, becoming the Club’s record goalscorer, an achievement bettered only by Ally McCoist.
