1902: Rangers suffer a 1st Round exit from the Glasgow Merchants’ Charity Cup thanks to a 1-0 loss to Hibs. Jock Drummond scored an OG.

1941: Rangers secure the first Southern League Cup with a 4-2 win over Hearts in the Replayed Final. A goal each from Alex Venters, Willie Thornton, Charlie Johnston and Jimmy Smith won Rangers the same Trophy they had lifted the year previously, only then it had been titled the “Emergency War Cup.” The Southern League Cup would be a competition that Rangers would see great success in during its 6 year existence, winning it 4 times and reaching the other 2 Finals. The wartime Tournament was the inspiration behind the Scottish League Cup, another competition that Rangers would see outstanding success in.
1949: Rangers’ 3-match Scandinavian Tour comes to an end as they are defeated 2-1 by Akademisk. Willie Findlay scored for the Ibrox side. The Light Blues won each of their other 2 previous matches, against Malmo and Staevnet (a Copenhagen Select team), with Findlay scoring in all 3 games.
1961: Rangers are beaten 2-0 at Ibrox by Fiorentina in the 1st Leg of the Final of the inaugural European Cup Winners’ Cup. Whilst 1-0 down, Eric Caldow missed the chance to level the match from the penalty spot. Many were unhappy at the tactics employed by the Italians, so much so that the Italian flag was ripped down from the Ibrox stand. Rangers would travel to Florence 10 days later with mammoth task on their hands. This would also be the only ECWC Final to be played over 2 Legs.
1967: Rangers’ preparation for the European Cup Winners’ Cup Final continued with a 2-1 Friendly victory over Morton at Cappielow. Bobby Watson and Roger Hynd were on target.
1969: Colin Stein scores 4 as Scotland thrash Cyprus 8-0 in a Friendly at Hampden.

  1. Woah! I’m really loving the template/theme of this site.

It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s very difficult to get that “perfect balance” between user friendliness and visual appearance.
I must say you have done a awesome job with this. Additionally,
the blog loads very quick for me on Firefox. Exceptional Blog!
